The New Year is where endings meet beginnings—where uncertainty gives way to hope and possibility. The story of Chem-Impex began in one of those moments—a turning point where an ending made way for something new.
In 1977, my parents immigrated to the U.S. with little more than hope and hard work. My mom, an interior designer, worked in a bookbinding factory. My dad, a chemist, worked the night shift as a production chemist. It wasn’t the future they had imagined when they left the comfort of friends and family for a jalopy of a car and boxes for furniture.
Then, at the turn of 1981, everything changed. My dad quit his job. That same day, my mom told him she was expecting their first child. Faced with uncertainty, they chose to take a bold step forward: they started their own company.
No internet. No connections. Just a phonebook and persistence. Call by call, week by week, they pushed forward. And finally—a breakthrough. Our first order: Pabst Brewing Company 🍺.
When I ask my dad how they started something when they had nothing, he tells me, “We started something because we had nothing.”
